Vitamin A can cause birth defects if taken in high doses during early pregnancy.
Risk factors for birth defects:
(1) dose > 10,000 IU per day from supplements
(2) high intake during the periconceptual period and first trimester
(3) daily intake of foods high in vitamin A (liver, fish liver oil, etc)
Birth defects described:
(1) cleft palate and/or harelip
(2) macroglossia
(3) defects in eye development
(4) hydrocephalus
(5) defects in other tissues arising from the embryonic cranial neural crest
