Chong et al developed a simple equation for predicting the ideal needle insertion length for performing a lumbar puncture in a pediatric patient. The authors are from the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.
This is similar to the equation of Abe et al.
Patient selection: 0.5 to 15 years, body weight from 7 to 63 kilograms, height from 70 to 162 cm
Parameters:
(1) height in centimeters
(2) weight in kilograms
ideal depth of needle insertion in cm =
= (10 * (weight) / (height)) + 1
Performance:
• The regression coefficient is 0.77
