Faisy et al developed an equation for predicting resting energy expenditure for a medical patient receiving mechanical ventilation. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Paris.
Patient selection: > 18 years and mechanically ventilated for > 24 hours in a medical intensive care unit (ICU)
Parameters:
(1) height in centimeters
(2) weight in kilograms
(3) minute ventilation in L per minute
(4) body temperature in °C
resting energy expenditure in kcal per day =
= (14 * (height in cm)) + (8 * (body weight in kg)) + (94 * (temperature in °C)) + (32 * (minute ventilation)) - 4,834
