Lewis et al developed an equation for predicting the total volume of a prostate cancer based on needle biopsy findings and serum PSA. The authors are from Washington University in St Louis and Duke University in Durham.
Biopsies were ultrasound guided.
Parameters:
(1) total tumor length in mm
(2) number of positive cores
(3) serum PSA in ng/mL
total tumor length in mm =
= SUM(length of tumor in all of the positive cores)
predicted tumor volume in cubic cm =
= (0.216 * (tumor length in mm)) + (0.0216 * EXP(number of positive cores)) + 0.137 * (serum PSA))
Limitations:
• 6 cores were taken in most cases. Taking fewer than 4 cores might not perform very well.
