Akhlaghi et al developed equations for estimating height from upper limb measurements in young Iranian adults. The authors are from Tehran University.
Subjects: medical students 21 to 26 years of age
Measurements were taken of the left upper limb in right-handed individuals. The dominant hand tends to have a greater breadth than the nondominant hand.
Output: stature in cm
Measurements:
(1) hand length in mm
(2) hand breadth in mm
(3) fifth finger length in mm
(4) fourth finger length in mm
(5) third finger length in mm
(6) second finger length in mm
(7) upper limb length in cm (from inferior border of the acromion process to the tip of the middle finger with arm held out at 90 degrees to the body)
(8) arm length in cm (from inferior border of the acromion process to the head of the radius)
(9) foream length in cm (from head of the radius to the distal wrist crease)
Male Measure |
Stature |
upper limb length |
(1.231 * (upper limb)) + 81.532 |
arm length |
(1.886 * (arm)) + 107.344 |
foream length |
(1.886 * (forearm)) + 107.344 |
hand length |
(0.315 * (hand length)) + 115.996 |
hand breadth |
(0.481 * (hand breadth)) + 134.433 |
second finger length |
(0.988 * (second finger)) + 103.222 |
third finger length |
(0.834 * (third finger)) + 108.718 |
fourth finger length |
(0.731 * (fourth finger)) + 121.260 |
fifth finger length |
(0.779 * (fifth finger)) + 127.34459 |
upper limb and hand length |
(0.822*(upper limb)) + (0.237*(hand length)) + 68.229 |
where:
• Measurements in mm are not converted to cm. The decimal change is in the multiplying factor.
• Note that the equations for arm and forearm lengths are the same in males.
