Kin et al reported equations for estimating the weight of a patient’s pancreas. This can be helpful when evaluating patients undergoing islet transplantation. The authors are from the University of Alberta and Capital Health Authority in Edmonton.
Parameters:
(1) age
(2) gender
(3) body surface area (BSA), from height and weight
If the patient is <= 40 years of age:
weight of the pancreas in grams =
= (0.742 * (body weight in kilograms)) + (0.837 * (age in years)) + 4.355
If the patient is > 40 years of age:
weight of the pancreas in grams =
= (60.036 * (BSA in square meters)) – (7.152 if female, else 0) – 17.624
