A person with intellectual disability often can engage in physical activity provided adequate preparations have been made.
Barriers to physical activity:
(1) significant comorbid conditions
(2) physical deconditioning
(3) obesity
(4) lack of adequate supervision
(5) lack of support from caregivers, teachers, coaches, etc
(6) lack of transportation
(7) lack of suitable facilities
The physical activity should be:
(1) safe for the person
(2) enjoyable
