A patient with fibromyalgia may be at increased risk for complications following orthopedic surgery.
Patient selection: elective orthopedic surgery in a patient with fibromyalgia
The patient may be at increased risk for:
(1) greater pain
(2) prolonged opioid use
(3) more difficult rehabilitation
(4) lower satisfaction
(5) impaired sleep
(6) medical and/or surgical complications
The patient should:
(1) be informed of possible problems following surgery
(2) have alternative nonsurgical methods of therapy tried if possible
(3) be encouraged to have prehabilitation prior to surgery
(4) have aggressive rehabilitation after surgery
