Description

Faigenbaum et al have projected the future impact of exercise deficit disorder (EDD), especially in pediatric patients. The authors are from the College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey.

Exercise deficit disorder:

(1) reduced levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA)

(2) failure to engage at a level of activity consistent with long-term health

The recommended level of MVPA is 60 minutes or more per day.

Risk factors for EDD:

(1) physical or mental disability

(2) below par physical performance compared to peers

(3) failure of parents, teachers and adults to encourage physical activity

(4) habitual inactivity with deconditioning

(5) obesity

(6) lack of resources for outdoor or indoor activities
