Description

A patient undergoing exercise may developed thrombosis in the upper extremity.


Risk factors:

(1) extreme exertion, especially in the overhead athlete

(2) blunt trauma to the upper extremity

(3) hypercoagulable state (Factor V Leiden, other)

(4) recent surgery on the upper arm

 

Clinical features:

(1) pain in the arm

(2) swelling of the arm

(3) palpable lump in the arm or axilla

 

The diagnosis can be made by demonstrating thrombus in one or more veins of the upper extremity.

 

Complications:

(1) venous type thoracic outlet syndrome

(2) post-thrombotic syndrome

(3) pulmonary embolism
