A multi-dose vial of a medication must be discarded if certain criteria are met.
A multi-dose vial of medication must be discarded if:
(1) the expiration date on an unopened vial has passed
(2) there are questions about the sterility of the vial contents
(3) the vial's beyond-use date has passed
The "beyond-use" date is the revised expiration date based on the day that the vial was opened. The number of days that a vial can be used varies with different medications but the default time is 28 days after the vial was opened or entered for the first time.
Exception: Vaccines in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state immunization programs.
