Extramedullary hematopoiesis may present as a tumor mass.
Extramedullary hematopoiesis-related tumors may occur in:
(1) paranasal sinus
(2) mediastinum
(3) lung
(4) spleen
(5) adrenal gland
(6) other site
The possibility of extramedullary hematopoiesis as the cause of a mass should be suspected in any patient with chronic anemia, especially significant sickle cell disease or myelofibrosis.
The diagnosis may not be made until the lesionis biopsied, with demonstration of hematopoietic tissue.
