Description

Paraproteinemia can interfere with a wide range of laboratory tests. Measurements of HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol may be falsely low in the presence of paraproteinemia.

Clinical features:

(1) presence of paraproteinemia

(2) lower than expected LDL cholesterol and/ HDL cholesterol measured on a chemical analyzer

(3) exclusion of alternative explanation for hypocholesterolemia

(4) correction of cholesterol concentrations after removal or reduction of the paraprotein

Falsely low concentrations of cholesterol can result failure to treat hyperlipidemia.
