Lanzarini et al reported the feasibility index as a measure of availability for a diagnostic test. The authors are from IRCCS-Policlinico S. Matteo in Pavia, Italy.
feasibility index in percent =
= (number of patients in whom the test can be performed) / (total number of patients) * 100%
The index refers to the availability of a measure rather than the number of patients in whom the test is performed.
Factors affecting availability of a test:
(1) cost of performing the test
(2) need for specialized equipment
(3) need for specialized personnel to perform the test
(4) need for special reagents or materials
A test that is available is often of more value than one that is not. A clinically useful test is one that has a high feasibility index.
