A feud, vendetta or faida is a bitter conflict between people that may last for years or generations.
The conflict may be between:
(1) individuals
(2) family members
(3) clans or tribes
(4) other social or political group
In private feuds the behavior may not always be reciprocated (one-sided).
The goal is to retaliate for, or to take of vengeance for:
(1) an insult, slight or other sign of disrespect
(2) murder or injury
(3) other perceived wrong
The cause may or may not be legitimate.
Underlying foundation:
(1) the need to protect honor or prestige
(2) blood relations and kinship
The taking of vengeance is considered a sacred duty. Failure to exact revenge results in a loss of honor and prestige.
