Lassen et al reported the Fibrosis of Adipose Tissue (FAT) score, which is predictive of weight loss following gastric bypass surgery. Abdominal fat that is trapped in fibrous tissue may be resistant to mobilization. The authors are from multiple institutions in France.
Patient selection: morbidly obese, undergoing gastric bypass surgery (RYGB)
Specimen: subcutaneous biopsy of adipose tissue
Examination: routine histology
Parameters:
(1) pericellular fibrosis (PCF)
(2) perilobular fibrosis (PLF)

= 2 * (FAT score)
Interpretation:
• A FAT score of 0 or 1 is "low fibrosis".
• A FAT score of 2 or 3 is "high fibrosis" and is associated with poor weight loss after the surgery.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.66
