When recorded data is being reviewed, certain findings may cause the reviewer to wonder if the data is not valid, or "fudged". The presence of suspicious findings is not proof of improper technique, but should prompt the reviewer to examine the laboratory worker or testing area more closely.
Findings suspicious for invalid data:
(1) The same pen (ink, color, texture) is used throughout.
(2) The penmanship of the recorded data is the same throughout, without variation.
(3) Data readings are identical for relatively long periods.
(4) Continuous data readings are to the nearest single digit.
(5) Listed times are identical, not showing expected variations for weekends, holidays, or other potential changes from routine.
(6) The recording sheet is too neat for the time period in question, failing to show the expected "wear and tear".
(7) Data is missing for periods of time.
