Description

If a fire occurs then the company needs a plan to deal with it.


Approaches to a fire may include:

(1) evacuation without attempts to control

(2) use of fire extinguishers

(3) use of an internal fire brigade

(4) sprinkler system (water mist)

(5) automated chemical release (carbon dioxide, halon, dry chemical, wet chemical, foam)

 

If fire extinguishers are used:

(1) the extinguishers must be regularly inspected

(2) the extinguishers must be installed properly

(3) extinguishers should be suitable for the types of fires expected

(4) workers should be trained and drilled in their use

 

If a sprinkler system is used:

(1) a control system must be in place

(2) the system should be regularly inspected

(3) the consequences of water release must be considered

(4) the release path should be unobstructed

 

If a chemical release system is used:

(1) the system must be regularly inspected

(2) workers must be educated about potential hazards

(3) there should be enough time for workers to escape prior to release

(4) a distinctive when the system is  alarm should sound once the system is triggered

(5) warning signs should be posted
