Description

Placement of a Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) can rarely result in a fistula between a portal or hepatic vein and a bile duct.


Patient selection: placement of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS)

 

Clinical findings:

(1) fever

(2) anemia

(3) variable jaundice

(4) bacteremia not explained by other cause, often polymicrobial

(5) variable hemobilia

 

Partial or complete occlusion of the TIPS can occur.
