FODMAP stands for:
(1) fermentable
(2) oligosaccharides
(3) disaccharides
(4) monosaccharides
and
(5) polyols
This overlaps with lactose intolerance, with undigested and unabsorbed compounds being digested by enteric bacteria, causing gas, bloating and diarrhea.
The diet is restrictive so may be difficult for long-term adherence.
It is important that the patient have an adequate intake of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients.
The diet may be beneficial for patients with:
(1) irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
(2) non-celiac gluten sensitivity
(3) unexplained gas, bloating or diarrhea without specific diagnosis
(4) lactose intolerance not completely responsive to a lactose-free diet
One strategy may be to start with a FODMAP elimination diet, then add back components to see which classes can and cannot be tolerated. This may help with long-term compliance.
