Description

Some patients with food allergies may develop an arthritis following exposure to a trigger food.

Clinical features:

(1) presence of a food allergy, especially milk allergy

(2) symptomatic exacerbation of an inflammatory arthritis following exposure to the food, that may include morning stiffness, tender joints and joint swelling

(3) alleviation of arthritis if food eliminated from the diet

(4) exclusion of other causes of arthritis (although a patient may have a mixed disorder)

The allergen in the food can be identified by additional testing (skin testing, demonstration of IgG antibodies, RAST, etc).
