Description

Ensrud et al developed a simple index to identify frailty in older women. This is easy to perform in a clinical study. The authors are participants in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures Research Group (SOFRG).

Patient selection: females >= 69 years of age

Parameters:

(1) weight loss over 2 years (in the SOF study during the period between the third and fourth examinations), whether intended or unintended

(2) ability to rise from a chair 5 times without using her arms

(3) energy level (feel full of energy)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 3

• The higher the score the greater the level of frailty.

• Frailty correlates with falls, fractures, disability and death.
