The French Society ofAnesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (SFAR) and theFrench Institute for Health Surveillance has reported criteria for ICU-acquired pneumonia.
Components - all 3 of the following:
(1) radiological findings suggesting pneumonia
(2) clinical findings
(3) pulmonary findings
Radiological findings suggesting pneumonia - one of the following:
(1) >= 2 successive images suggesting a focus of pneumonia
(2) >= 1 image suggesting a focus of pneumonia in the absence of (heart disease and underlying lung disease)
One or both of the following clinical findings:
(1) temperature > 38.3°C with no other cause
(2) leukocyte concentration < 4*10^9/L or >= 12*10^9/L
At least 2 of the following pulmonary findings:
(1) purulent tracheobronchial secretions
(2) cough or dyspnea
(3) oxygen desaturation OR increased oxygen requirement OR need for ventilation
Confirmation of the diagnosis - at least one of the following:
(1) bronchoalveolar lavage with >= 10^4 colony-forming units (CFU) per mL
(2) protected distal sampling with >= 10^3 CFU/mL
(3) tracheobronchial aspiration with >= 10^6 CFU/mL
