Gaslighting is a form of abuse in which the perpetrator tries to psychologically manipulate another person without appearing to do so.
Goal: to make the target question his/her perceptions, understanding, sanity, beliefs or judgment
Methods may include:
(1) denial
(2) misdirection
(3) contradiction
(4) misinformation (lying)
(5) environmental manipulation
(6) withholding or altering information
(7) undermining
Susceptibility factors in the target:
(1) low self-esteem or high self-doubt
(2) abusive or dysfunctional background
(3) psychological disabilities
(4) some level of trust in the perpetrator
