The 12-Item Geriatric Depression Scale for Nursing and Residential Home Patients (GDS-12R) is a shorter version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30). It is based on the GDS-15 and reflects differences between community dwelling and institutionalized elderly patients.
The instrument consists of 12 questions:
Items removed from the GDS-15: 9, 10 and 15
Positive directed (“Yes” indicates not depressed): 1, 5, 7, 9, 11
Negative directed (“Yes” indicates depressed): 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
