The extent of disease (EOD) of metastatic tumor involving bone can be graded based on the number of lesions and extent of disease. Patients with a high extent of disease have a poor prognosis and may benefit from more aggressive therapy.
Finding |
EOD Grade |
normal or abnormal due to benign bone disease |
0 |
number of bony metastases < 6 |
1 |
number of bone metastases 6 - 20 |
2 |
number of bone metastases > 20 but less than Grade 4 |
3 |
>75% of ribs, vertebrae and pelvic bone involved ("super scan") |
4 |
Size of Metastasis |
Count |
< 50% of a vertrebral body |
as 1 lesion |
about the size of 1 vertebral body |
as 2 lesions |
>= 50% but < 95% of a vertebral body |
not stated (? 1.5 lesions) |
The greater the extent of disease, the poorer the prognosis.
