Description

The Guided Risk Assessment (GRA) Tool can be used to help identify possible risk factors for a pediatric patient undergoing conscious sedation. This can help identify a patient who may require closer monitoring or extra precautions during the procedure.

Sedation risk factors:

(1) snoring, stridor or sleep apnea

(2) craniofacial malformations

(3) history of airway difficulty

(4) vomiting, bowel obstruction

(5) gastroesophageal reflux

(6) pneumonia or requirement for oxygen

(7) reactive airways disease

(8) hypovolemia or cardiac disease

(9) sepsis

(10) altered mental status

(11) history of sedation failure

(12) inadequate NPO time

If a problem is identified, then additional questions can help determine the level of severity and the possible need for additional studies.
