The amount of HCV RNA in the blood is useful for the diagnosis and management of a patient with viral hepatitis C.
Units:
(1) copies of RNA per mL
(2) International Units (IU) per mL
Different analytical methods may give different number of RNA copies per mL on the same sample. The International Units are an attempt to standardize measuring and reporting of viral load.
The converting factor between copies per mL and IU per mL is method dependent.
1 IU/mL may represent from 0.9 to 5.2 copies/mL.
