Hearing loss has been reported following receipt of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine.
Pathogenesis: The MMR vaccine contains live attenuated virus. It is hypothesized that one of the viruses causes the hearing loss.
Estimated frequency: 1 case per 6-8 million doses
Clinical features:
(1) receipt of the MMR vaccine containing live attenuated viruses
(2) onset of unilateral or bilateral hearing loss 1-4 weeks after the vaccination
(3) exclusion of other causes of hearing loss
