A woman with Wilson Disease may first present with a HELLP-like syndrome during pregnancy.
HELLP = hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets
Features shared by HELLP and Wilson's disease:
(1) hemolytic anemia
(2) elevated liver enzymes
(3) low platelet count
Clues to diagnosis may include:
(1) family members with Wilson's disease
(2) neuropsychiatric findings
(3) Kayser-Fleischer rings
(4) cardiomyopathy
(5) unexplained arthritis
(6) postpartum acute liver failure
(7) evidence of hemolysis or liver disease prior to pregnancy
