A number of conditions are associated with hemoconcentration. This can be detected by an increase in hematocrit.
Parameters:
(1) current hematocrit in percent
(2) baseline hematocrit in percent (when healthy)
change in hematocrit =
= ((current hematocrit) - (baseline hematocrit) / (baseline hematocrit) *100%
Interpretation:
• An increase in hematocrit > 20% indicates hemoconcentration.
The diagnosis of hemoconcentration requires exclusion of other causes of an increase in hematocrit such as blood transfusion.
