Lee et al reported the hepatic steatosis index (HSI) to evaluate a patient for the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). These can help to identify patients who may benefit from imaging studies to measure hepatic fat. The authors are from Seoul National University, Asan Medical Center and Seoul Municipal Boramae Hospital in South Korea.

Interpretation:
• A score < 30 ruled out NAFLD with a sensitivity of 93%.
• A score > 36 showed a specificity of 92% for NAFLD.
• These cutoffs resulted in 86% of patients being correctly classified.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.81.
