Poynard et al developed a simple index to identify a patient with viral hepatitis C who probably has significant findings on histology. The authors are from the METAVIR and CLINIVIR study groups in France.
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) platelet count

AP index =
= (points for age) + (points for platelet count)
Interpretation:
• minimum AP index: 0
• maximum AP index: 10
• An AP index >= 6 indicates significant histologic findings (moderate to severe necroinflammatory lesions, septal fibrosis and/or cirrhosis).
• A patient with a score >= 6 probably can be managed without a liver biopsy but a liver biopsy may be necessary for a lower score.
Performance:
• The sensitivity for an index >= 6 was 52% with a specificity of 93%.
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.763 +/- 0.043.
Purpose: To evaluate a patient with viral hepatitis C using the AP index of Poynard et al.
Specialty: Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases
Objective: risk factors, clinical diagnosis, including family history for genetics, laboratory tests, disease progression
ICD-10: B18.2,
