Green tea extract may be associated with hepatotoxicity as well as other adverse effects.
Plant: Camellia sinensis
Chemicals include a variety of polyphenols including catechins and flavanols. (-)-epigallocatechin gallate may be hepatotoxic.
Hepatotoxicity may include:
(1) acute hepatitis
(2) acute liver failure
(3) cholestasis
Diagnostic features:
(1) use of a green tea extract, especially if taken in a large amount or if not taken according to directions
(2) onset of liver injury after taking the green tea extract
(3) exclusion of other hepatotoxic compounds
(4) improvement after discontinuing the green tea extract, although this may take weeks
