Pruitt described a grading system for burn wound infection based on the histologic extent of tissue invasion. The author is from the US Army Institute of Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston in Texas.
Histologic Features
Grade
surface contamination by a small number of microbes
I
dense surface colonization
II
partial microbial penetration of the eschar
III
full-thickness penetration of the eschar
IV
microbial proliferation in the subeschar space (at the non-viable and viable tissue interface)
V
microbes in unburned tissue, focal microinvasion
VIa
microbes in unburned tissue, deep invasion
VIb
microbes in unburned tissue, microvascular and/or lymphatic invasion
VIc
