A histologic section may show cracks or fissures for a number of reasons.
Appearance under the microscope: resemble cracks seen in the ground during a drought
Conditions that can cause tissue cracks:
(1) incomplete fixation
(2) problems during tissue processing (excessive dehydration, inadequate clearing, poor paraffin infiltration)
(3) water bath temperature too high
(4) excessive use of coolant spray during sectioning
