Description

The Human Blood Index (HBI) is the proportion of mosquito blood meals derived from humans. It can be used to estimate the risk of malaria transmission in a community.

Analytical method: PCR using primers to mitochondrial DNA from various animals targeted by mosquitoes (human, cow, pig, goat, dog, etc)

Parameters:

(1) total number of mosquitoes collected

(2) total number of collected mosquitoes with evidence of blood meal

(3) total number of collected mosquitoes with evidence of human blood

crude HBI =

= (number of mosquitoes with human blood) / (total number of mosquitoes collected)

Variations on the index:

(1) ratio based on mosquitoes with blood meals

(2) ratio based on mosquitoes with unidentified blood meals excluded

(3) ratios for each species of msoquito
