Some hypersensitivity reactions to a medication may be due to milk allergy. There may be a trace of milk proteins in the lactose used as an excipient for the formulation.
Significance:
(1) anaphylaxis
(2) mistaking the hypersensitivity reaction as a worsening of the condition being treated, such as asthma
Clinical features:
(1) The patient has anaphylaxis or other hypersensitivity reaction to a drug.
(2) The patient has evidence of a milk allergy.
(3) The drug has lactose as an excipient.
(4) The patient does not react to the drug formulated without lactose.
