Ringer's lactate is an isotonic intravenous fluid that is used for resuscitation of patients in the Emergency Department.
Composition: osmolarity of 273 mOsm per liter; pH 6.5; 28 mmol/L sodium lactate
Infusion of 30 mL per kg of lactated Ringer's solution can cause a mean rise in serum lactate of 0.93 mmol/L (0.93/30 = 0.031).
Normally the lactate is rapidly cleared. Clearance of lactate may be decreased in liver disease.
Specimens for monitoring blood lactate should be drawn before or a couple hours after the infusion if possible.
