Description

A total knee arthroplasty should be performed with clear indications and the absence of contraindications.


Indication - all of the following:

(1) knee disorder with severe negative impact on the patient (day and night pain, disability, poor quality of life, severe deformity)

(2) failure of conservative interventions to reduce the severity

(3) acceptance of limited survival of the prosthesis (informed consent)

 

Absolute contraindications:

(1) knee sepsis

(2) remote site of active infection

(3) extensor mechanism dysfunction

(4) severe vascular disease

(5) recurvatum deformity secondary to muscular weakness

(6) presence of a well-functioning knee arthrodesis

 

Relative contraindications:

(1) significant comorbid conditions limiting anesthesia, surgery or rehabilitation

(2) skin disorder (psoriasis, other) within the operative field

(3) past history of osteomyelitis affecting the knee

(4) neuropathic joint

(5) morbid obesity
