Leukocyte reduction of a blood product (leuko-reduced) should be considered if certain conditions are present. The leukoreduction may be done at the time of blood donation, during product processing or at the time of administration.
Products considered:
(1) packed red blood cells
(2) platelets
Indications for the use of a leukocyte reduced blood product:
(1) prevention of febrile, nonhemolytic transfusion reactions
(2) prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and other infectious agents
(3) reduction in the risk for HLA alloimmunization
(4) prevention of post-cardiopulmonary bypass lung injury
