Description

Performing an electrocardiograph (ECG) on a patient prior to noncardiac surgery is indicated if the patient has risk factors for cardiac disease or for cardiac complications following surgery.


 

Indications for performing an ECG prior to surgery:

(1) male >= 40 years of age; female >= 50 years of age

(2) history of current or significant smoking

(3) diabetes mellitus

(4) history of high blood pressure

(5) history of dyspnea (shortness of breath)

(6) exercise-induced dyspnea or chest pain

(7) history of cardiac arrhythmias

(8) history of chest pain

(9) history of angina or myocardial infarction

(10) history of previous cardiac surgery

(11) history of congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy

(12) current procedure involves vascular surgery

 

Referral to a cardiologist should be considered if:

(1) the ECG is abnormal

(2) history of exercise-induced symptoms

(3) history of angina or myocardial infarction

(4) history of cardiac arrhythmias

(5) history of congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy
