Doppler ultrasonography can be useful for evaluating a male patient with a variety of conditions affecting the scrotum, testes and paratesticular tissues.
Indications for Ultrasonography
Detectable Conditions
acute scrotal pain
acute torsion, epididymitis
trauma
testicular rupture
testicular mass
tumors (usually hypoechoic)
paratesticular swelling
hydrocele, varicocele, spermatocele, epididymal cyst
male infertility
varicocele, testicular cyst, testicular tumor, microlithiasis, small testes
inability to adequately palpate the testis
chronic scrotal pain with a palpable swelling
Chronic scrotal pain in the absence of a palpable swelling is not an indication for ultrasonography.
