Risser developed an instrument for measuring the level of patient satisfaction with a nurse and the nursing care delivered. It uses 25 items divided into 3 subscales. The study was done at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Subscales (total 25 items):
(1) technical-professional area (7 items)
(2) educational relationship (7 items)
(3) trusting relationship (11 items)

"Positive" response questions:
(1) subscale 1: 1, 2, 4, 7
(2) subscale 2: 1, 4, 5, 7
(3) subscale 3: 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11
"Negative" response questions:
(1) subscale 1: 3, 5, 6
(2) subscale 2: 2, 3, 6
(3) subscale 3: 2, 3, 5, 7, 10
patient satisfaction scale =
= SUM(points for all 25 scale items)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 25
• maximum score: 125
• The higher the score, the greater the patient's relative dissatisfaction.
Limitations
• The (1) direction of scoring for "positive" and "negative" responses and (2) the interpretation of the final score seem counter-intuitive (viz., a higher score should indicate higher satisfaction).
