Description

Katz et al developed the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) as a quick method for evaluating a person's insulin sensitivity. It correlates well with the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp technique. The inverse of QUICKI is the insulin resistance index, which is a good indirect measure of insulin resistance.

QUICKI =

= 1 / (LOG10 ((fasting insulin in µU/mL) * (fasting plasma glucose in mg/dL))) =

=1 / (LOG10 (fasting insulin in µU/mL) + LOG10 (fasting plasma glucose in mg/dL))

insulin resistance index (IR) =

= LOG10 (fasting insulin) + LOG10 (fasting plasma glucose) =

= 1 / (QUICKI)

Patient Population

QUICKI

nonobese

0.382 +/- 0.007

obese

0.331 +/- 0.010

diabetic

0.304 +/- 0.007

from page 2405, Katz (2000)

QUICKI is:

(1) correlated with HOMA (homeostasis model assessment).

(2) correlated with the indices of insulin sensitivity derived from glucose clamp studies (r = 0.78)
