An intrahepatic gallbladder is completely encased by liver.
It occurs when there is an arrest of the normal migration of the gallbladder during the second month of gestation.
An intrahepatic gallbladder is subject to all of the diseases of the gallbladder, especially cholelithiasis.
Problems that may arise:
(1) standard laparoscopic approaches for cholecystectomy will not work
(2) it appears as a focal intrahepatic defect on imaging studies and may be mistaken for a cyst or tumor
(3) suppurative cholecystitis can result in an intrahepatic abscess
