Description

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has proposed "intrauterine inflammation or infection or both" as an alternative term to chorioamnionitis, using the acronym Triple I.


Criteria for confirmed III - one or both of the following:

(1) positive microbiological test performed on amniotic fluid (positive Gram stain, culture)

(2) placental histopathology

 

Suspected III - both of the following:

(1) documented maternal intrapartum fever as evidenced by one or both of the following:

(1a) maternal intrapartum temperature >= 39.0°C

(1b) maternal intrapartum temperature 38.0-38.9°C for >= 30 minutes

(2) one or more of the following:

(2a) maternal leukocytosis (WBC count > 15,000 per µL in the absence of corticosteroids)

(2b) purulent cervical drainage

(2c) fetal tachycardia (> 160 bpm for >= 10 minutes, excluding accelerations)
