Tokunaga et al reported a score to diagnose chronic eosinophilic rhinosinusitis. The authors are from multiple institutions in Japan and members of the Japanese Epidemiological Survey of Refractory Eosinophilic Chronic (JESREC) Rhinosinusitis Study.
Patient selection: chronic rhinosinusitis
Parameters:
(1) side(s) affected
(2) nasal polyps
(3) CT shadow in ethmoid vs maxillary
(4) eosinophils in the peripheral blood

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 17
• A score >= 11 is consistent with chronic eosinophilic rhinosinusitis.
• More active disease is associated with aspirin intolerance, NSAID intolerance and/or bronchial asthma.
Performance:
• The sensitivity is 83% and specificity 66%.
