Description

Jordans' anomaly refers to the presence of lipid droplets in the cytoplasm of granulocytes.


The presence of Jordans' anomaly is a hallmark of Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome.

 

Features in the peripheral blood smear:

(1) presence of cytoplasmic inclusion in granulocytes

(2) the inclusions stain positive with lipid stains

 

Features of Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome include:

(1) lipid droplets in the cells of multiple organs (skin, liver, bone marrow, etc)

(2) ichthyosis

(3) NAFLD that can progress to cirrhosis

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) possibly total parenteral nutrition

(2) fat deposits limited to a single organ (aspiration pneumonia, fat embolism)
