When a bullet hits a target, it conveys both kinetic energy and momentum. Momentum is one of the factors that contributes to the stopping power of a bullet.
Parameters:
(1) weight of the bullet in kilograms (1 grain = 0.0648 grams)
(2) velocity in meters per second
The velocity of the bullet can be measured. The velocity at the point of impact is less based on environmental factors.
momentum in kg•m/s (Joule•s) =
= (mass) * (velocity)
kinetic energy in Joules =
= 0.5 * (mass) * ((velocity)^2)
kinetic energy =
= 0.5 * (velocity) * (momentum)
